West Moseley
West Molesey is a Thames-side village in the borough of Elmbridge, in Surrey. Until the 1930’s it was primarily an agricultural community with four large farms and several market gardens still in full production that year. The centre of the village includes St. Peter’s church, a small number of shops and a few pubs and restaurants.
Nearby Molesey Hurst was one of England’s oldest sporting venues. Prizefighting and horse racing took place at the venue. Prizefighting was finally banned here in 1824 but horse racing continued until 1962. It is claimed that cricket was played here as early as 1723 and you can see a painting of a match at Molesey Hurst in the 1790s hanging in the Long Room of the Lords. It was also the location of one of the first games of golf in England. The Molesey Hurst is now known as Hurst Park and is the site of a housing estate.
