Staines

The Staines community sits in the borough of Surrey within Spelthorne, along the London Commuter Belt in South East England.  The M25 motorway is the eastern edge of this suburban town sitting 17 miles (27km) from London’s Charing Cross.

Two common theories to the community’s name exist; one based on Staines being derived from the Old English word “stones” from a long lost site of monoliths nearby in Stanwell.  The other theory states the name is derived from “St. Anne’s in the Thames” possibly referring to an old church.  Staines was settled in 43 AD, the same year the Romans came to Britain who called it “ad Pontes” or ‘at the bridge’.  The bridge was constructed across the Thames connecting the town with the road from present day London to near Silchester.
