Roehampton
Roehampton was just a small village, and viewed as an extension of Putney for centuries. In the 16th century, a royal hunting ground was formed and it was believed to be moved to its current location to the edge of the common and boasted 33 homes, 2 inns, and a population of 200. By the 18th century, grand homes dotted the landscape and shops lined the streets, many of which still exist today.
During the 1950’s and 1960’s, a major change took place when the London County Council acquired much of the land on the southwest side of the area. On it they built the enormous Alton Estate, and widened the roadways to accommodate traffic to and from the area. Today, Roehampton enjoys a solid mix of business, homes, and entertainment venues, in addition to some of the lushest countryside in the London area.
