Apparently, the name Mitcham is Anglo-Saxon and is believed to mean Big Settlement. Before the Saxons and Romans were present documents state that there was a Celtic settlement in the area and there is evidence of a fort being located in the Pollards Hill area. In the gas works in Mitcham a discovery was made of Roman era graves and a well on the site gives evidence of a Roman settlement. A Saxon graveyard located on the north bank of the River Wandle is the largest discovery known. Many of the artefacts found can be seen in the British Museum.
